And, there are times of the year like the Festive Season when all this is “tested!” Are you worrying and wondering how you will celebrate and relax yet still "survive" this Festive Season…and still be slim, feel well and healthy in the New Year…Not undo all the good work of your TLC-Program? While we do not recommend (at all) that you do deviate (after all, what is one Festive Season compared to the many you will have being healthier in years to come?)…the decision is yours!

Your Decision? To Deviate or, Not!
Deviate Totally: To go-off your TLC-Program totally during the Festive Season to re-start in January!
This is not something we advise at all, it is difficult to re-start again…much of the "good-work" will be undone! See below…
Deviate Selectively: Only deviate at a few special events while still doing your TLC-Program in-between!
This is a better option than above. While it is not ideal, the tips below will assist you (not undoing everything achieved).
Stay on your TLC-Program: Sacrificing one Festive Season for many more and doing your TLC-Program 100%!
This is what we recommend most… especially if you are near your Goal Weight and Wellbeing Targets! See tips below!
If You “Must” Deviate…Our Survival Tips!
Starch intake!
All those nice cookies/sweets! Moderation! Limit to once per day only. Try keep to cakes and sweets with dark chocolate as this will reduce Insulin surges. Eat cheesecake ahead of any other cakes.
Big, Bad Meals!
If you have to! But, be very strict with your next meals (plus ensure additional water intake!). A very general rule: More than 2 (small) handfuls = fat! Avoid “Fast-Foods” as much as possible!
Alcohol!
One of the worst triggers of Insulin! Try to avoid it. But, if you must have that "one small" (!) drink (that glass of champagne or two!)…eat some cheese (at least 30g) 20 minutes before having a drink (this will reduce your Insulin increasing). Good quality dry, red wine is the "best" alcohol to have.
Snacking!
If have to! Select Protein snacks (e.g. "biltong" or beef jerky or, a treat containing cheese such as cheesecake). Remember if you have not completed your TLC-Program (plus your final SP-Stabilisation Program), the body will "overreact"…don't overdo…everything in moderation!
Preparation!
Why not try some of the TLC-Recipes in your TLC-Program Book…make an extra effort to make some of the nice meals! Be inventive…prepare…enjoy…the next Festive Season will be delightful as everyone else deprives themselves and you look and feel great while eating as you please!
Water!
Drink additional water (at least 6-8 glasses per day/as indicated with your Eating Plan/Wellbeing Prescriptions)!
Dining Out!
Call the restaurant (say you’re on a Medical Program/Diet). You will be amazed at the assistance & support you will receive! Also, select foods/types/combinations allowed on your TLC-Program. Moderation…the key word.
“Good Friends!”
If you really do not want to drink alcohol…order Ginger Ale (or, a soda that looks like a "drink")…this will "fool" those very "good friends" who insist you really must have a drink (or, some who may really want to see you fail)!
If all else fails!
Totally ‘distracted' over the Festive Season? Go back on your TLC-Program 100% in January (Your New Year's Resolution!) Note: If near goal weight, do your TLC-Program 100% for at least 3-5 days and then contact your nearest TLC-Wellbeing Clinic for "TLC"…to help you complete your TLC-Program!
Otherwise…Enjoy, Be Happy and Have Fun! These "Tips" are not the general rules of TLC-Programs.

TURBO-CHARGE YOUR RESULTS? WHAT TO KNOW…AND DO!

As with any human (Wellbeing) process…some folk will “struggle” and not know the real reasons for their slower (than expected) results. We have found over the past 20 years that up to 10% of TLC-Program Clients, do have results that are (initially) slower than the average person. This can be very demotivating and frustrating and, may even trigger a Client into “giving up” and (incorrectly) blaming his or her TLC-Program! Here are some important aspects to do/know about/consider/avoid/solve…to achieve even better results. Remember…there are always reasons (often quite simple reasons) for a slower than normal rate of fat-loss or, reduced (Wellbeing Goal) results. The key is to find the reasons/causes and solve them! A healthy body is an extremely delicate balance of many elements including many essential chemicals and hormones that can easily be disrupted! Each highly personalised TLC-Program aims to scientifically, safely and rapidly correct these imbalances. Our international research and practical experience over many years with many 1000’s of Clients worldwide shows the main problem-factors include:
DEVIATING AND…THE MIND MATTERS: THE RULES…COMMITMENT…ATTITUDE AND MOTIVATION…
This is always a sensitive issue with Clients! Besides the main 5 key TLC-Program “Rules” (Correct Foods + Accurate Quantities + Correct Combinations + Water + Supplements)…often without realising it, Clients can quite “innocently” deviate from what is specified and prescribed: This can be easily solved by re-checking intake and instructions. It can be as “innocent” as licking the spoon of your baby’s feed or, not weighing accurately or, intake of “hidden” carbohydrates by adding in the wrong vegetables or, having a commercial salad containing a salad dressing with sugar or, using cough syrup or throat lozenges which are significant sources of sugar and (in many instances) alcohol as well or, even not taking water or supplements indicated! However (in too many cases), it is a “MIND MATTER!” That is, leading research (including the most recent “Placebo-Effect” research on the “Healing power of the Mind”) scientifically proves that if the mind is not “set-on-the-right-path”…most (if not all) medical/surgical/ clinical/Wellbeing interventions will fail/not achieve success! The same applies to TLC-Programs! It is essential to be 100% committed and strictly follow all instructions, really believing that what you are doing to obtain greater Wellbeing is a small sacrifice for a short time (with significant and astounding short and longer-term benefits!). We have seen over the years that positive, self-disciplined & committed Clients that “do it right first time” are the ones that succeed with all their goals rapidly…achieving above average, long-term Wellbeing! Unfortunately, whether it is a deliberate action of deviating, or an unconscious habit of tasting, the impact on the body is the same…slower-loss/poor results and potential for total failure!
INTAKE OF DIET PILLS…DIURETICS…AMPHETAMINES…ANTI-DEPRESSANTS etc…
It is not only the medications you are currently taking, but also the medications you were taking several weeks (even, in some cases, months/years) before you started your TLC-Program, which may be slowing down your progress. In some individuals the “rebound” (negative) effects of particularly “diet pills and potions” (Note: Any intake of these is not approved while on a TLC-Program) can persist for many months, and hamper the impact of the TLC-Program initially. The good news is that the TLC-Program will “speed-up” detoxification and rejuvenation processes to “cleanse and renew” your body. It will take patience but, once the after-effects of these diet pills or diuretics pass out of your system, you will get results! As regards, mild tranquillisers (e.g. Librium & Miltown) will not have a noticeable impact on the fat-loss rate and results but, the stronger (high-potency) drugs do impact. Phenothiazine (e.g. Sparine, Thorazine & Mellaril) and long-term anti-depressants or, psycho-energisers do inhibit fat-loss. The key aspect to consider is that although some of these (drugs) will inhibit or, slow-down results, you will still be losing weight (fat). That is still far better than gaining, so the key is to be realistic in your expectations & goals and, then you will be much happier with your results.
INTAKE OF SEX HORMONES…
Even though many a woman comes back depressed from her gynae after being told: “The pill did not make you fat, you are eating too much!”… the fact is that all sex hormones do impact on the body in 2 key ways: 1) They do slow-down or, hold-up fat-loss and, 2) They stimulate the production of Insulin which triggers fat storage in the body. So in essence, not only slowing down fat-loss, but speeding up weight-gain! This applies to Estrogen, the female hormone contained in the Pill and in Estrogen Replacement Therapy (ERT/HRT) during and after menopause, and also to Testosterone, the male hormone. The only way to overcome this is to consider other methods of birth control or, cut down (in consultation with your doctor) your dosages that contain Estrogen and/or, Testosterone. Even more dramatic is the impact of fertility drugs, especially those used for IVF/GIFT procedures. The long-term Wellbeing impact on the body is still unclear, but the impact on rapid weight-gain and slower fat-loss rates is very evident. In most cases, the TLC-Program will impact well but, in certain cases (after long term/many treatments) it can take time to restore balance in the body. We have seen (in many, many cases) that doing the TLC-Program in conjunction with fertility treatments not only improves the results of fertility treatment but, also reduces the negative impact (on hormonal balance) that results in weight-gain/poor Wellbeing.
HORMONAL (THYROID) DEFICIENCY…
While the Diagnostics employed for developing TLC-Programs are extremely advanced (assessing up to 3500 factors) and do (most often) identify and eliminate this as a cause of slow fat-loss…standard thyroid tests do not always reveal if there is a more complex Thyroid Condition. In cases of (what is termed) “Stubborn Resistance” to fat-loss…further thyroid tests need to be done (e.g. Some Obese Patients demonstrate antibodies against their own thyroid hormone & need synthetic thyroid medication to treat this condition).

SUPERFOODS…FOOD AS YOUR MEDICINE!

While we have said for many years (over 20 years!) that: “With a TLC-Program …Food can be your Medicine!”…at last, many in the more “conventional” Health and Wellbeing community are now starting to say there are things like “Superfoods…foods that really do make a difference with greater Wellbeing! Many of these experts are even now saying you don’t need many preventative medicines…with rare exceptions, you just need a really good diet!” Why now suddenly? Well many leading, “cutting-edge” research studies have demonstrated this fact beyond any doubt! These “Superfoods”, besides improving general Wellbeing…resulting in optimum weight…they say…can stop changes that lead to diseases such as Diabetes, Alzheimer’s and many other lifestyle-based diseases (including CVD and certain Cancers)…increasing life quality/life expectancy!
SOY…for Cholesterol! "No, adding Soy to your diet does not mean pouring more Soy Sauce on your Chinese food," says Leslie Bonci, MPH, RD, LDN, Director of Sports Nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. It does mean adding Soy foods such as Tofu, Soy Milk, Soy Nuts, or the Green Soybeans…called “Edamame” by the Japanese. Not everyone is convinced about Soy's heart-healthy benefits but its Cholesterol-lowering benefits are strongly indicated (A study in July 2003 in “The Journal of the American Medical Association” showed that amongst other foods, a diet including Soy lowered Cholesterol as much as Statins, the most widely prescribed Cholesterol medicine.
YOGHURT…Calcium for Your Bones! Yoghurt helps keep your bones strong and lessens your chance of fractures as you get older. Calcium keeps teeth strong, helps your muscles contract, and your heart beat. Recent studies have even shown that Calcium may lower your risk of Colon Polyps, and help you lose weight. Researchers at Purdue University found that women who consume Calcium from Low-fat Dairy Products, or get at least 1000 milligrams a day, showed an overall decrease in body weight. Yoghurt (and also Cheese) are some of the best sources of Calcium.
What are some of the other Superfoods?
BROCCOLI…ORANGES…SALMON…EGGS…SPINACH…GREEN TEA…TOMATOES…TURKEY!
So are "Superfoods" for real or, just another diet-book gimmick in a market flooded with them? Beth Kitchin, MS, RD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition at the University of Alabama-Birmingham says: "I think it's a good message…there's good data to support the health benefits of all these foods. They're what we might call “functional foods” because you eat them for a very specific purpose. Salmon is a great source of Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Yoghurt is a great source of Calcium and natural bacterial cultures that help maintain a healthy digestive tract, and Tea has been shown over and over again to have a role in preventing some Cancers." Can you lose weight on a "Superfoods" diet? Of course you can, although that's viewed by us (and many other experts) as a side-benefit! The “Superfoods” way of looking at things is a lifestyle choice, not just a simple a weight-loss program! But, if you make these foods a lifestyle choice, you'll get better…feel better…you'll look better…and, much research shows, even enhance your life expectancy! WELLBEING…what does it really mean?

Wellbeing…a very significant word…really important to each person! Unfortunately today, it is too often (and improperly) used by marketers to sell every new product, “fad” diet, pill and potion. But, do you know what it really means to you? When asked, most health professionals and specialists will briefly describe it as: A balanced/quality lifestyle…diagnostics (heart, blood & other indicators) within “acceptable” ranges…no major illnesses…psychological-emotional happiness etc.
Most people, when asked, will generally say: Wellbeing means…being healthy and happy…but, have not spent any real time defining it further!
All these descriptions are far too general. To really be able to improve it, we all need to understand it much better…to be able to change it for the better! We have asked many people over recent months what Wellbeing means to them and, the overall conclusion is that the average person has 10 000 - 50 000 Factors that all combine (each day/month/year) to make or, affect the unique state of their Wellbeing…from 100’s of very small things to larger, more obvious things!
When really asked to explain it…the 1000’s of Factors mentioned included: Health, home, family, children, work, stress, food, body-weight, financial status, environment (weather/pollution/security/safety/technology), recognition, fashion, a “meaningful” life, recreation, travel, relationships, psychological, education…and, the list goes on-and-on (almost as numerous as the number of people asked)!
In carefully considering this all, our 12 main conclusions are:
* Wellbeing actually means many different things…it is unique to each person
* Wellbeing is not just one thing…it summarises many 1000’s of Factors.
* “Good” and “Bad” Wellbeing Factors need to be identified by each person.
* Each person must know what their own greater Wellbeing really means.
* Changing just a few Factors can affect many other Factors…whole Wellbeing.
* Wellbeing is considerably (dramatically) influenced by attitude (well-over 50%).
* Wellbeing is a journey as it constantly changes with age, time & circumstance.
* Great Wellbeing requires ongoing effort…replacing bad with good!
* Wellbeing comes from the small things to the larger things….all combine!
* Doing something is far better than doing nothing to improve Wellbeing!
* The quest for greater Wellbeing starts and ends with each individual…
* It is not a theoretical concept, it is a real summary of a persons whole life!

HOME REMEDIES…THE ‘FINAL’ WORD!
From Windex to Chicken Soup to Toothpaste…Final “expert opinion” on some favorite Home Remedies:
Windex as a “cure for all”…
Answer: Don't dump-out your medicine chest and rely solely on Windex Glass Cleaner. Its active ingredient (ammonium hydroxide) may assist with infections and rashes (also poison ivy) but, over-use could result in further irritation or burning of the skin.
Chicken Soup for Colds and Flu…
Answer: Grandma was right! A consequence of a cold and flu results in the body losing fluid and chicken soup contains (besides water) significant salt and other minerals. Salt helps retain water and the other contents assist with rejuvenation (producing new proteins and antibodies that assist fighting the infection). So don't count on zinc, echinacea, and other vitamins and minerals alone to relieve colds or flu...eat chicken soup!
Toothpaste and Pimples…
Answer: Toothpaste does more than help you achieve a great smile! A “dab” of toothpaste on a pimple can get rid of it by morning! It essentially works like a clay mask (dehydrating the pimple and absorbing the oil). Avoid “whitening” toothpaste due to high levels of hydrogen peroxide (that may irritate or burn the skin). People with a sensitive skin, should not use toothpaste for this!

BEWARE…TOP 5 FALSE ‘FAD-DIET’ CLAIMS!

1. Eat as Much as You Like…Lose Weight No Matter How Much You Eat…even Your Favorite Fast Foods! False! The laws of “thermodynamics” (In this context: Your Food Intake and related Metabolic Processes) can only stretch so far! The well known saying is: “You are what you eat!” The total/type of intake does matter and, fast foods are NOT healthy choices! Most-often fast foods contain high amounts of saturated fats, high levels of glycemic carbs, very little fiber and, often many harmful (chemical) additives. An alternative is: Eating a balanced, low-carb diet (of natural, healthy foods) which will actually give you a “thermodynamic advantage!” This means you actually burn more calories as heat and energy. In fact, studies in the New England Journal of Medicine once again prove that those on a low-carb, higher-protein diet shed three times as much weight as those on a low-fat diet! Unlike high-carbohydrate diets, protein triggers a response in the stomach that stimulates the release of Glucagon, a hormone that helps us to burn previously stored fat. Just by eating a small amount of protein, Glucagon levels rise within thirty minutes, peaking at two hours….staying elevated in the blood for several hours and, giving your body plenty of time to use the fat stored around your waist and hips for fuel. TLC-Programs are short-term, balanced, low-carb, higher-protein programs…the very best way (with related wellbeing guidelines) to obtain results quickly and safely…and, maintain wellbeing successfully and easily.
2. Use our newly-developed “X”…and, Lose Weight Without any Diet or, Exercise!
False! No scientific proof exists at all for these types of claims! It takes EFFORT to lose body fat and maintain wellbeing. A change to a balanced lifestyle is the ONLY solution…this includes a scientific, personalised diet and, an appropriate/moderate exercise regime (with Pilates and Yoga as present popular alternatives). In fact, just keeping busy…just ”fidgeting” can result in 350 calories burned a day or 5-14 kg fat-loss in a year. Just an extra hour a day of “fidgeting” (even 2-3 kph on a treadmill while reading the newspaper or a book) can, besides some cardio-vascular benefits, help lose the fat! A TLC-Program plus its Wellbeing Guidelines and Exercise Programs is a wise choice! There are no magic diets or, short-cuts…your wellbeing is too important!
3. Lose Weight Permanently! Never ever Diet Again!
False! Don't fall for this common low-carb and, pills & potions diet scam…it is not scientifically possible! NOTHING IS PERMANENT…it takes a real, ongoing lifestyle change to ensure long-term wellbeing benefits. Ongoing wellbeing and weight management requires an ongoing and conscious choice of what goes into your mouth. While TLC-Programs do promise long-lasting results (if wellbeing guidelines are used)…frequent events of self-abuse and negligence will result in health/wellbeing problems again (not unlike the like the movie: “Supersize Me” where the person ate huge amounts of just fast food and became very ill). TLC-Programs provide the “platform” for optimised wellbeing and health (a normal lifestyle…living happily in moderation)!
4. Block the Absorption of Fat/Carbs/Calories with our Natural Products: Diet Supplements/Pills/Patch/Cream!
False! So-called…“Carb blockers”, “fat blockers” or any pill/potion that claims to block calories/fat are yet another diet scam that just results in your money being wasted and, your wellbeing being harmed! IT'S SIMPLY NOT POSSIBLE to block the absorption from your stomach with artificial ingredients (without having a devastating effect on your hormonal balance). Many of these products actually cause severe obesity! The American Journal of Human Biology reports that these “products” result in what is called: “Yo-Yo dieting”, where dieters who have deprived themselves (into starvation-mode with pills/potions) gain weight at faster rates than non-dieters when they begin eating normally again. Under normal conditions, humans only absorb about 80% of the nutrients from the food they eat, and the rest of the nutrients pass through the body. But, when deprived of nourishment (in starvation-mode), the body becomes a super-efficient machine. It takes more work for the body to burn fat than carbohydrate, so the body in starvation-mode learns to burn carbohydrate for energy and to store fat, rather than use the energy for growth. When the malnourished person begins eating normally again, the body does not re-adapt. Instead, it keeps storing fat as if malnourished. It keeps metabolising 100% of nutrients from the food. Induction diets, tricks for rapid weight-loss, all put the body into starvation mode. So, it's important to change your LIFESTYLE rather than look for the latest "lettuce fad-diet" if you want to remain healthy. 5. Celebrity Diets…Everybody will lose weight the same as Me…and, look as good as Me!
False! Claims that a new “miracle diet” promoted by some celebrity will cause everyone to lose weight are NONSENSE! People differ…over 3000 factors/profile aspects such as: age, sex, metabolism, medical history including conditions such as menopause, hypothyroidism, adrenal problems (e.g. PCOS) will all affect weight-loss. Of course the Celebrity looks great…so would you if you had 24/7 access to a special chef/plastic surgeons/doctors/personal trainers/beauty salons…unlimited resources and time! Just recently a very well-known celebrity in LA (who promotes her own diet and books etc.) was seen “slipping” out of a plastic surgery clinic (after liposuction)! Don’t believe all these (often very convincing) adverts and commercial best-sellers…their aim (above all else) is not always your wellbeing…it’s to make a lot of money as quickly as possible! TLC-Programs (available for nearly 20 years now) are highly personalised and safe programs that assess up to 3000 factors unique to each individual to ensure rapid and effective results…you are unique so your return to greater wellbeing must be unique! WORRIED ABOUT BIRD FLU…CAN VITAMIN C BE A CURE?

If it does become an epidemic…and, it is not yet!! Some would say…the simple answer is: YES…for more detail…read on!
Opinions by: Dr Thomas Levy, one of the world’s experts in effects of vitamin C on viruses and, author of highly respected publication: “Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases and Toxins: Curing the Incurable.” His comments on vitamin C and the looming “Bird Flu Epidemic”
The “Killing-curing” effect: He says he has not found any virus for which vitamin C does not exert a virucidal (killing-curing) effect, as long as enough vitamin C reaches the virus (any acute infection). No tests have been conducted on this latest Bird Flu Strain but, he says that vitamin C is likely to be just-as effective with this Strain.
High Doses: Although there are no studies yet on treating Asian Bird Flu with vitamin C, Dr Robert Cathcart (a world-renowned immune expert) who has directly treated thousands of cases of life threatening infectious diseases with high dose vitamin C indicates that treatment of the Bird Flu with massive doses of ascorbate would be the same as any other flu. Except…that the severity of the disease indicates that it may require unusually massive doses of ascorbic acid orally or, even intravenous sodium ascorbate. He says that he has not seen any flu yet that was not cured or, markedly ameliorated by massive doses of vitamin C.
Multiple Effects: Antiviral drugs, work by inhibiting neuraminidase (produced by viruses and essential for their ability to replicate). So too does vitamin C but, this is only one of more than ten ways that vitamin C knocks out viruses, both by inhibiting the virus itself, and by strengthening the body’s own immune response (for example, by improving the number of functions of immune cells such as: macrophages, lymphocytes and neutrophils), upping interferon and nitric oxide and, making more antibodies which target viruses.
Money! The problem is that the efficacy of vitamin C has not been adequately tested on humans by drug companies and, therefore it has not been scientifically proven/disproven! It’s a tragedy that these studies aren’t done for life-threatening diseases such as Bird Flu, but the unfortunate truth is that vitamin C is cheap to make and, is not patentable…unlike the drugs developed for this (such as Tamiflu)! In addition, Vitamin C (in high doses) has been well-proven to be non-toxic in both adults and children over many years! The same cannot be said for the new generations of antiviral drugs…what side-effects will result in years to come?
Proven: However, we do know that vitamin C reduces the severitiy of colds and flu. Over 20 controlled trials using at least 1 gram a day against the common cold have been published, showing that the duration is typically decreased by about 25% and symptoms are much less severe. Bird Flu will however require much higher dosages! One recent human trial found that students who took hourly doses of 1000 mg of vitamin C for the first 6 hours and then 3 times daily had a decrease in symptoms of 85% compared to students in the control group. In the case of Bird Flu that might well be the difference between life and death!
Careful Intake: It’s highly likely that vitamin C would be effective against Bird Flu if you can get the dose high enough. Dr Mark Levine (US National Institute of Health) has shown that you can get plasma levels up to 200mcmol/l with 3 grams of vitamin C six times a day, at which point vitamin C becomes profoundly anti-viral. However, with intravenous infusion of 100g a day, concentration goes up to 15,000mcmol/l. No virus has yet been shown to survive at that level! The intake of very high doses of vitamin C is dependent on individual “bowel tolerance!” High dosages must therefore be carefully administered by a Doctor!
So…vitamin C could well be an Effective Answer…Prevention is important!
Once again…it is important to stress that it is not yet an epidemic!
What is some good advice…if the Bird Flu Epidemic does come?
* Continue with your TLC-Program…Optimise your Wellbeing! Build-up your immune system with
moderate and healthy eating together with appropriate supplementation.
* Only avoid any poultry products and find other protein sources if local health agencies indicate the presence of Bird Flu and, issue related health/consumption warnings.
* Purchase high quality vitamin C: It might be useful to have a supply of good quality vitamin C and, other key supplements at hand if an epidemic does break out.
* Take additional vitamin C if you have any Flu Symptoms: There is no harm in having 100 grams a day short-term (3 days) then stopping once all symptoms are gone.
* Find a doctor: That is, find one who believes in either the distinct benefits of vitamin C OR, who up-to-date with more conventional but, the latest regimes/preventions. The trick with any infection is not to get it in the first place by prevention and, keeping your immune system strong for any possible primary and secondary infections.
* Always consult your Doctor: Most important, if unsure/concerned, always consult your Family Doctor/GP as he/she has access and insight into your specific medical history, local health matters and relevant/appropriate regimes.

ACHES AND PAINS? SOME ANSWERS AND SOLUTIONS!

1. TUMMY ACHES AND DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS…
POSSIBLE CAUSES: In 20% of cases Fructose (a sugar) may be the cause of these Digestive Problems! Specifically, a condition called Fructose Intolerance (Mal-absorption) is the main cause of tummy aches and digestive problems…
SOURCES: Fructose is naturally found in many fruits (apples, peaches, pears, oranges etc) and, is the main ingredient in many processed foods such as juices, sodas, sweetners, condiments, fast-foods and snacks. High-fructose corn syrup (cheaper than can-syrup!) is often an ingredient in these processed foods.
SYMPTOMS: Whatever the source, symptoms such as pain, flatulence, bloating and other gastrointestinal problems are occurring in ever-increasing numbers of people. As one of doctors says with some humor…”A worldwide epidemic of gas and groans!”
THE PROBLEM: Fructose is not easily absorbed by the body and is usually absorbed in the small intestine but, for those with Fructose Intolerance, some travels to the colon, where bacteria ferment the Fructose. This causes the release of hydrogen and methane gases, which cause pain, bloating, flatulence, and diarrhea. This fact is well known (and has been for many years) but, what has changed in the last few decades is that Fructose intake in the U.S. (and in many other countries) has increased as portion sizes have increased…and, so have number of people suffering with symptoms!
NOTES: Table (cane) sugar does not cause this reaction because it also contains Glucose, which aids in the absorption process. These effects may be more severe in those with IBS-Irritable Bowel Syndrome or other diagnosed digestive disorders.
THE SOLUTIONS: A healthier diet (limiting high-Fructose, processed foods) and , spacing the amount and the consumption-rate (of Fructose intake) which will help reduce any symptoms. Your body does however need fruit! It can absorb Fructose…it just needs time to cope with the intake! Also, eat slower, savor & enjoy (this really helps!). Do a TLC-Program! If it persists, see your Family Doctor for more diagnostics to be conducted & appropriate treatment.
2. PMS-PRE-MENSTRUAL SYNDROME…CRAMPS AND PAINS…
THE CAUSES: People suffering from extreme Menstrual Cramps and Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) will try anything to reduce their pain and discomfort! The causes could originate from far too many variables to fully discuss here…what is more important is what are the possible solution! As one Client said: “Never-mind the causes…just give me the solution and … give it to me NOW!
MYTHS AND HOME REMEDIES: So, can a glass of coke, a chunk of chocolate or a handful of peanuts help curb this? Well yes, it may well work, but we do not recommend it! Ultimately, people should only use something that has been tested and shown to work in large groups of people. Hot baths work for some and, not at all for others…”TLC” and understanding from a Partner certainly does help!”
SOLUTIONS: Studies have clearly shown that additional intake of calcium, chromium and certain carbohydrates can help. What we do know (from many Clients providing feedback over the years) is that their TLC-Programs have helped considerably with this and, they have not had to resort to any home remedies any longer! Rather do a TLC-Program!
3. HEADACHES & MIGRAINES…
THE CAUSES: This is increasingly becoming a world-wide epidemic that certainly (in extreme cases) has a considerable impact on people’s quality of lives and their whole wellbeing. Once again the causes could be from many sources ranging from environment (noise/air pollution and stress) to simple dehydration, to incorrect food intake, to physiological and/or neurological causes. Once again…solutions are needed…”Just make it go way!”…we hear from headache/migraine sufferers!
SOLUTIONS: In many cases (over 80%) the causes of a headache is dehydration (some research shows the average person dehydrates up to 10 times per day!). Drink more water…you’ll be amazed in minutes! On the other-hand…home remedies for headaches may be on your kitchen counter or at your neighborhood coffee shop! Coffee constricts the blood vessels, which reduces blood flow and eases pressure associated with certain headaches such as painful migraines and tension headaches! So, if you feel a headache coming on, down a cup or so of coffee and it may help! Research has shown that caffeine is as good as “ibuprofen”at relieving headaches! However, there is a “catch 22”…reduction of intake or, even normal intake of caffeine may also cause headaches due to detoxification and other chemical reactions…so use this “home remedy” with caution!

WANT QUICKER, BETTER RESULTS? BE AWARE OF/AVOID THESE

As with any human (wellbeing) process,some folk will “struggle” and not know the real reasons for their slower (than expected) results. We have found over the past 20 years that about 1-2% of TLC-Program Clients, do have results that are (initially) slower than the average person. This can be very demotivating and frustrating and, may even trigger a Client into “giving up” and (incorrectly) blaming his or her TLC-Program! Here are some important aspects to know about/consider/avoid/ solve - to achieve even better results.
Remember, there are always reasons (often quite simple reasons) for a slower than normal rate of fat-loss or, reduced results. The key is to find the reasons/causes and solve them! A healthy body is an extremely delicate balance of many elements including many essential chemicals and hormones that can easily be disrupted!
TLC-Programs aim to scientifically, safely and rapidly correct these imbalances. Our international research and practical experience over many years with hundreds of thousands of Clients worldwide shows the main reasons for slower results to be:
INTAKE OF DIET PILLS/ DIURETICS/ AMPHETAMINES/TRANQUILISERS/
ANTI-DEPRESSANTS/ PSYCH DRUGS:
It is not only the medications you are currently taking, but also the medications you were taking several weeks (even, in some cases, months/years) before you started your TLC-Program, which may be slowing down your progress. In some individuals the “rebound” (negative) effects of particularly “diet pills and potions” (Note: Any intake of these is not approved while on a TLC-Program) can persist for many months, and hamper the impact of the TLC-Program initially. The good news is that the TLC-Program will “speed-up” detoxification and rejuvenation processes to “cleanse and renew” your body. It will take patience but, once the after-effects of these diet pills or diuretics pass out of your system, you will get results! As regards, mild tranquillisers (e.g. Librium & Miltown) will not have a noticeable impact on the fat-loss rate and results but, the stronger (high-potency) drugs do impact. Phenothiazine (e.g. Sparine, Thorazine & Mellaril) and long-term anti-depressants or, psycho-energisers do inhibit fat-loss. The key aspect to consider is that although some of these (drugs) will inhibit or, slow-down results, you will still be losing weight (fat). That is still far better than gaining, so the key is to be realistic in your expectations & goals and, then you will be much happier with your results.
INTAKE OF SEX HORMONES:
Even though many a woman comes back depressed from her gynae after being told: “The pill did not make you fat, you are eating too much!”, the fact is that all sex hormones do impact on the body in 2 key ways:
1. They do slow-down or, hold-up fat-loss and,
2. They stimulate the production of insulin which triggers fat storage in the body. So in essence, not only slowing down fat-loss, but speeding up weight-gain!
This applies to Estrogen, the female hormone contained in the Pill and in Estrogen Replacement Therapy (ERT/HRT) during and after menopause, and also to Testosterone, the male hormone. The only way to overcome this is to consider other methods of birth control or, cut down (in consultation with your doctor) your dosages that contain estrogen and/or, testosterone.
Even more dramatic is the impact of fertility drugs, especially those used for IVF/GIFT procedures. The long-term wellbeing impact on the body is still unclear, but the impact on rapid weight-gain and slower fat-loss rates is very evident. In most cases the TLC-Program will impact well but, in certain cases (after long term/many treatments) it can take time to restore balance in the body. We have seen (in many cases) that doing the TLC-Program in conjunction with fertility treatments not only improves the results of fertility treatment but, also reduces the negative impact (on hormonal balance) that results in weight-gain/poor wellbeing.
HORMONAL (THYROID) DEFICIENCY:
While the Diagnostics employed for developing TLC-Programs are extremely advanced and do (most often) identify and eliminate this as a cause of slow fat-loss, standard thyroid tests do not always reveal if there is a more complex Thyroid Condition. In cases of (what is termed) “Stubborn Resistance” to fat-loss further more targeted thyroid tests need to be done (for example, some Obese Patients demonstrate antibodies against their own thyroid hormone and need synthetic thyroid medication to treat this condition).
DEVIATING AND THE MIND MATTERS: COMMITMENT, ATTITUDE AND MOTIVATION:
This is always a sensitive issue with Clients! Often without realising it Clients can quite “innocently” deviate from what is specified and prescribed: This can be easily solved by re-checking intake and instructions. It can be as “innocent” as licking the spoon of your baby’s feed or, not weighing accurately or, intake of “hidden” carbohydrates by adding in the wrong vegetables or, having a commercial salad containing a salad dressing with sugar or, using cough syrup or throat lozenges which are significant sources of sugar and (in many instances) alcohol as well or, even not taking water or supplements indicated!
However (in too many cases), it is a “MIND MATTER!” That is, leading research (including the most recent “Placebo-Effect” research on the “Healing power of the Mind”) scientifically proves that if the mind is not “set-on-the-right-path”, most (if not all) medical/surgical/ clinical/wellbeing interventions will fail/not achieve success. The same applies to TLC-Programs! It is essential to be 100% committed and strictly follow all instructions, really believing that what you are doing to obtain greater wellbeing is a small sacrifice for a short time (with significant and astounding short and longer-term benefits!). Are you tired of: Constantly feeling tired, always feeling bloated, sick of "yo-yo" dieting and feeling despondent (like a failure) after "failing" yet another diet? Serotonin is released normally in the body when Insulin levels drop, triggering the feeling of "satisfaction" (and no need for more food!). When do things go wrong? With what is now called: Insulin or Carbohydrate Sensitivity: Your body releases excessive amounts of Insulin in response to Carbohydrate intake. This release of Insulin interferes with your body's normal "chemical" communication and responses. Your body reacts incorrectly and does not absorb Glucose (Carbohydrates) into the cells properly. This leaves too much Insulin still in the blood and as a result your body does not release enough Serotonin. The result is that you do not feel satisfied and still experience cravings and hunger (Insulin triggers hunger) even after eating a meal. This often leads to the consumption of even more Carbohydrates in an attempt to satisfy cravings (resulting in even greater Insulin release!). The presence of excess Insulin also leads to your body perceiving "starvation", as the proper cycle of burning food was not completed. This results in your body storing food as FAT…with weight gain and all the other side-effects!

WHAT BODY SHAPE ARE YOU?

Apple Shape? Apple Shapes store their body fat around their abdomen & chest, surrounding the internal organs such as the heart. Apple Shapes therefore have a higher risk of heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure and gall bladder disease. Apple Shapes lose excessive fat more easily (in more cases) than other Shapes.
Pear Shape? Pear Shapes store fat on their hips and thighs with these parts being wider than their shoulders. They carry their weight below the waist and have a greatly diminished health-risk profile than others (i.e. They are generally healthier). “Eskimo’s Energy”…Winter Broth
INGREDIENTS:
3-6 garlic cloves minced (to taste)
1 teaspoon olive oil (daily allowance)
2 tablespoons vegetable stock
1/2 teaspoon dried cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh rosemary or,
1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary.
1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme or,
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme.
Touch of salt (moderation and to taste).
PREPARATION:
Saute the garlic in the olive oil over high heat until garlic changes colour. Add the stock (mix stock in 2 cups water), turn the heat to medium-low and simmer for 20 minutes. Add the herbs and salt to taste. Simmer for five minutes. Serve.

Yes…on these cold winter days…you may also have a nice cuppa Hot Cocoa! THE GLYCEMIC INDEX

People often ask whether our TLC-Programs use or, are based on the Glycemic Index (GI).
Answer: No, TLC-Programs don’t use this.
The Glycemic Index was developed in 1981 to help people (especially diabetics and athletes) to maintain stable blood sugar levels. This Index ranks food on a scale from 0 to 100 according to the extent to which they raise blood sugar levels after intake.
High GI Foods include: Dried fruit, bananas, & carrots. Moderate GI Foods include: Pastas, rice, orange juice & green peas. Low GI Foods include: Beans, cruciferous veggies, tomatoes & apples.
TLC-Programs do not simply use the GI in the classification of foods that are permitted on a TLC-Program. Many more complex factors and aspects at a micro-biological level including carbohydrate content, chains of amino acids, genetics, brain and body biochemistry (endocrine system) etc. are considered. While the GI can play an important role in maintaining healthy blood sugar levels in conjunction with our TLC-Lifestyle Guidelines (after the final TLC-Stabilisation Program) it is not to be used while on a TLC-Program (as it will 'allow' foods that will impact negatively on TLC-Program Results, for example: Beans).
The best advice is: Only eat foods allowed on the TLC-Program as per the TLC-Program Books.

HEALTHY EXERCISE…WALKING = WELLBEING!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Walking 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, reduces the risk of having a heart attack just as much as those who had a more vigorous workout like jogging, doing aerobics or playing tennis, for the same amount of time! Risk is reduced by a third, regardless of the age and weight. Surveys of 72,488 women in a Nurses Health Study in the USA revealed that people who exercised vigorously for at least 1.5 hours per week reduced their risk of heart attack by 30% to 40%, but those who walked 3 hours a week at a pace of 20 minutes per mile achieved the same reduction! People who walked briskly for 5 or more hours a week cut their heart attack risk nearly in half. But take note, leisure walking will not do, it's brisk walking that makes the difference. To receive the full protective benefits of walking:
Walk at a moderate pace of 3-4 mph to raise heart rate to 60-80% of its maximum. Walk briskly at least 3 miles per hour (i.e. 20 minutes for 1 mile) preferably five hours a week. Even less than three hours a week of vigorous walking will cut risk of a heart attack by 50%. A wrist pedometer can help measure your distance by stride length.

COMMON OBSTACLE #1: Shame and Guilt!
Missed a meal… over-indulging…broke a rule or 2!
How to jump the hurdle: Knowing you overindulged etc. can be upsetting, but instead of punishing yourself with shame and guilt, learn from the lesson. Out of shame, you may feel tempted to stop and give up…Don’t! Seek help/advice, recommit yourself, go back to your goals and reasons for starting your TLC-Program, re-look at the guidelines and your goals in your TLC-Program Booklet, consider all that you achieved and how well you already felt/looked before this obstacle. Most important, do not let your “good friends” and others that may delight in your obstacle “win”…show them all you can do it and remind yourself that this (your TLC-Program) is not forever…a few weeks/months and it is done…on with a “normal” lifestyle again!! Best attitude: Pride and Determination.
COMMON OBSTACLE #2: Unrealistic Deadlines!
Wellbeing goals and target dates!

As we all know, the environment is less healthy today. Something to be aware of is that lead, aluminum, cadmium and mercury are common toxic metals. Lead is present in air, food, water and car exhaust fumes. Lead from the exhaust fumes ends up in the soil and on the plants that animals and humans consume. Smokers are likely to have high cadmium levels. Alcohol increases the absorption of lead. Avoid or reduce the risk of intake of these metals if possible: Some guidelines:
1. Don't buy unwrapped whole fruits and vegetables that do not require peeling. Especially avoid foods that have been exposed to street traffic.
2. Throw away outer leaves of cabbage, and lettuce etc.
3. Wash fruits and vegetables in a bowl of water with 2 tablespoons of vinegar or, use a special food cleaning wash.
4. Don't use aluminum utensils and cookware items.
5. Minimize intake of food contained or wrapped in aluminum.
6. Eat foods that contain pectin, for example: apples, bananas and carrots.
7. Ensure RDA Magnesium intake as it competes with aluminum for absorption which means it reduces the chance of absorbing aluminum.

THE “LOW-DOWN” ON CHOLESTEROL

While many people suffer from High (Total) Cholesterol which our TLC-Programs solve rapidly, we also do find a significant number of Clients with Low (Total) Cholesterol. A complex matter….read and find out more!
What is Cholesterol? In simple terms, it is range of specific, molecular-type hormones: As most folk today know, LDL is the “bad” Cholesterol (we want lower levels of) and HDL is the “good” cholesterol we want higher levels of. In all events, “poor” Cholesterol levels (LDL/HDL or, Total) are an important (ill) health indicator. Today, new research is moving away from focusing just on medications for lowering LDL. New research is now focused on optimising HDL production/levels…as higher levels of this (HDL) are seen as even more vital to heart health (than addressing just high LDL levels).
Why do we need it? Amongst others, we need cholesterol to build and maintain cell membranes for: production of sex hormones, to aid in the manufacture of bile (which helps digest fats), and to convert sunshine to vitamin D. It is also important for the metabolism of fat soluble vitamins (such as: A, D, E, and K).
Low (Total) Cholesterol? This is linked to Anxiety, Depression, Suicide and Hemorrhagic Stroke. Low cholesterol alters the way brain cells function. It is believed that brain cells with low levels of cholesterol have fewer serotonin receptors, preventing them from properly using this mood-stabilising brain chemical. Abnormally low levels of cholesterol may also indicate: Hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid gland, Liver disease, Malabsorption, inadequate absorption of nutrients from the intestines and, Malnutrition.
Total Cholesterol (Normal) Range: The range being used (accepted by the WHO) indicates 3.6 to 5.2 as normal for women, 3.6 to 5.6 as normal for men.
The Solution! TLC-Programs solve most (over 97%) of Cholesterol (Total/HDL/LDL) low/high problems within a few weeks but, in some cases (less than 2-3%) they cannot. In these instances, causes could factors such as familial genetic mutations that would require further diagnostics by the Client’s Specialist/GP and (often), a more specific (clinical) course of action. TLC-Clients are (wherever possible/indicated) informed when this may be the case.

The Background: Many people feel they are too young to be concerned about a Stroke. But according to Vivian Fritz. (Professor of Neurology at the world-renowned Wits Medical School in South Africa): "A Stroke is a common cause of death and one of the most common causes of adult disability.
A Stroke or ‘Brain Attack’ occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain fails and brain tissue is starved of blood. In 4 minutes of deprivation of essential nutrients and oxygen...brain cells begin to die".
There are 2 types of Strokes:
1) An Ischaemic Stroke: About 84 % of Strokes are caused by blockage of blood flow. These could be due to Atherosclerosis (Cholesterol-containing fatty deposits) which may cause a clot (Thrombosis) and,
2) A Haemorrhagic Stroke: This occurs when a blood vessel in the brain leaks or ruptures, causing damage to the surrounding brain. They are most commonly caused by High Blood Pressure.
The Warning Signs: Weakness in limbs or face, blurred or double vision, difficulty speaking or understanding (concentration), sudden severe headaches and bouts of dizziness or unsteadiness.
High Risk Factors:
Stress, High Blood Pressure or Hypertension (higher than 140 over "x") increases your risk of a Stroke four to five times, smoking increases your risk by 50%, Diabetes doubles your risk and, Obesity (being overweight) increase the risk of a Stroke by over 10 times.
Other Risk Factors Include:
Heart Disease, Coronary Artery Diseases/Defects, raised Blood-Cholesterol Levels (HDL/LDL Ratio), high fat diets/lifestyles, heavy alcohol intake, a sedentary lifestyle (lack of exercise), drug abuse and, certain diet preparations (we call them "fad diets and potions!") have also been linked to increased risk.
What can you do?
Well, one of the Key Risk Reducers is a Healthy Eating Regimen and Lifestyle! This will reduce many of the High Risk Factors such as: High Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure, Hypertension, the onset of Diabetes (Type 2)...and, dramatically improve overall wellbeing.

FOR EXISTING CLIENTS/PATIENTS..."Survival Tips" FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON

AS YOU KNOW, FOOD BECOMES YOUR MEDICINE FOR A SHORT WHILE...BUT, CAN YOU SURVIVE OVER THE FESTIVE SEASON?
Yes you can survive! Tips on how to "get thru" the Festive Season!
1. Starch intake! Once per day (limit).
2. Big 'n Bad meals! Be very strict with your next meals (plus water!).
3. Alcohol! One of the worst triggers of insulin! Try to avoid it. But, if you must have that "one small" (!) drink (that glass of champagne or two!)...eat some cheese (at least 30g) 20 minutes before having a drink (this will reduce your insulin increasing).
4. Snacking! If have to! Select protein snacks (e.g. "biltong" or beef jerky or a treat containing cheese such as cheesecake). Remember if you have not completed your TLC-Program (plus your final Stabilisation Treatment), the body will "overreact"...don't overdo!
5. Water! Drink additional water (at least 6-8 glasses per day or, as indicated with your Eating Plan and Wellbeing Prescription)!
6. Dining Out! Call the restaurant (say you are on a "Medical Diet")...you will be amazed at the help you receive!
7. Good Friends! If you really do not want to drink alcohol...order Ginger Ale (or a soda that looks like a "drink")...this will "fool" those very "good friends" that insist you really have to have a drink! (or some who may want to see you fail!?).
8. If all else fails! Totally ‘distracted' over the Festive Season?! Go back on your TLC-Program 100% in January (make it a new, New Year's Resolution!) or, for at least 3-5 days if you are near completing your SP. In any case, we'll be waiting to give you "TLC!" and, help those that may have a guilty conscience!!!
